Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

If you live in Bloomington, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy summer fun. And if you live in a brand new apartment like Hayden Flats, you may not want to leave the luxuries of your own community for a destination vacation. Plus, with plenty of music venues, restaurants, hiking, art, and culture, Bloomington is a vacation destination in its own right. Here’s how to plan a summer staycation that encompasses everything unique and fun about Bloomington.

Day 1: Explore downtown Bloomington

Where to eat: Take a bike ride down the B-Line trail to Hopscotch Kitchen on Dodds Street before venturing on into downtown Bloomington.
Where to shop: Take in some sightseeing and shopping at the Bloomington Thrift Shop, Fountain Square, Bloomington Antique Mall, or Bonne Fête.
Where to sit: Spread a blanket in the grass or grab a park bench on The Square to take in the courthouse architecture, and don’t forget to check out the beautiful dome ceiling inside.

Day 2: Explore the outdoors

Where to eat: If you live at Hayden Flats, you can take the B-Line trail right to Brilliant Coffee. Where to hike: The B-Line connects to the Bloomington Rail Trail at Country Club Drive for just over five miles of trail. If you want to venture further out of town, take a short drive to Bean Blossom Bottoms or Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve, or the Charles C. Deam Wilderness section of the Hoosier National Forest, for 37.3 miles of trails.
Where to picnic: The Jesse H. and Beulah Chanley Cox Arboretum provides 11 acres of nature and outdoor architecture including including a pond, the Metz Carillon Tower, a gazebo, and numerous walking paths. It’s the perfect place to spread a blanket and enjoy a picnic.

Day 3: Explore art and culture

Where to eat: Have breakfast, lunch, or a weekend brunch at FARM Bloomington, a funky cafe with fresh, local foods and a menu that changes seasonally.
Where to observe: Take a stroll down Artisan Alley, where you can find art, music, classes, and play space for all ages. This is a non-profit dedicated to supporting local artists and fostering collaboration with the local community, and it’s a must-see in Bloomington.
Where to listen: Check out a live show at The Bluebird Nightclub, a Bloomington staple, or catch a live show at Switchyard Park on July 20th or August 24th at 6 p.m.
