The heat of summer is here! Like many of us, you may still have to dress professionally on occasion, even when you’d rather be wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Fortunately, there are many clothing options these days that allow you to dress both smartly and comfortably. And depending on the setting, you can often get away with dressing a little more casually during the summer. You might even be able to hold meetings in the business center at Hayden Flats, or remotely from your own apartment. When you do have to show up and make a good impression, here are some ways to accomplish that while still staying comfortable in the summer heat.

Choose Lightweight and Breathable Fabrics
Choose fabrics that accommodate your needs. Consider whether you’re traveling by car or bus or whether you’ll be walking extensively or perhaps cycling.

Cotton is lightweight and breathable but it does absorb moisture. Nylon and polyester aren’t as soft as cotton but they are quick-drying and wick moisture, so they might be a better choice if you anticipate breaking a sweat.

Linen is often a popular choice for casual summer wear because it’s durable and breathable, but like cotton, it will absorb moisture and wrinkle easily, which could be a consideration if you commute by bus or by car.

Silk is luxurious, soft, light, and breathable, but it's also very delicate, requires hand-washing or dry-cleaning, and can retain odors. It may be an appropriate fabric if you don’t anticipate a lot of strenuous activity outdoors.

Opt for Looser-Fitting Garments
Tight clothing can trap heat and restrict airflow. Instead, choose loose, flowy pants, skirts, or attire made with stretchy fabrics that allow for better ventilation and freedom of movement.

Stick to Lighter Colors
One reason the fashion industry emphasizes light colors in the summertime is that they’re just more practical. You want to wear colors that won’t absorb the light and heat of the sun. Pale blue, vanilla cream, and lilac are among the lighter colors trending this summer.

Embrace Light Layers
While it may seem counterintuitive to wear layers in hot weather, lightweight and breathable layers can actually help regulate your body temperature. A light cardigan, shrug, or blazer can be added or removed when needed and can keep you more comfortable indoors if the air conditioning is cranked up.

Protect Yourself from the Sun
If you commute by foot or by bike, you’ll want to protect yourself with sunscreen or a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A lightweight mineral sunblock that doesn’t appear greasy or caked on is often more suitable for a professional or formal environment.

Remember to Hydrate!
You’ll feel 100% better in whatever you’re wearing if you’re not parched and dehydrated. (This is a good idea in the wintertime, too!)

Dressing professionally during a heat wave is about finding the right balance between comfort and maintaining a polished appearance. By choosing the fabrics, colors, and accessories that make you feel the most comfortable, you can stay cool and professional even when it’s scorching outside.
